El barrio está callado, o mejor dicho, el barrio llora para adentro. Se nos fue uno de los “meros meros”, un tipo de esos que ya no fabrican, de la vieja escuela, de palabra y de “huevotes”. Se nos adelantó Roberto, nuestro “Beto”, ese gigante de mirada seria pero de corazón noble para los suyos, el que siempre tenía un saludo listo y la espalda cubierta para la banda.
La imagen que hoy inunda los estados de WhatsApp y los perfiles de Facebook de medio barrio es, paradójicamente, una muestra de su vitalidad. Ahí está él, en esa foto que ahora duele mirar. Con su gorra negra bien calada, como siempre le gustó, echando sombra sobre unos ojos que vieron demasiado pero que nunca bajaron la guardia. Lleva esa playera rosita, un color que en él no se veía suave, sino desafiante, porque al Beto le valía madre el qué dirán; él imponía su estilo. Y colgando del cuello, esa cadena dorada, gruesa, labrada, que era casi una extensión de su personalidad: pesada, brillante y auténtica.

Pero lo que te quiebra el alma al ver la foto no es la ropa, ni el “bling-bling”. Es el gesto. Ese saludo militar a medias, esa mano derecha llevada a la sien con una mezcla de respeto y despedida. ¿Sabía acaso que esa sería su última postal para la posteridad? Ese saludo, que tantas veces usó para recibir a los compadres o para despedirse antes de una “misión” complicada, hoy se siente como un adiós definitivo. Un “ahí se ven, raza, cuídenme el cantón”.
El moño negro que cruza su pecho en la imagen digital es la confirmación de la tragedia que nadie quería creer cuando el rumor empezó a correr como pólvora en la madrugada del sábado. Los detalles de su partida son confusos, como siempre pasa en estos casos donde la calle cobra sus facturas. Se habla de una emboscada, de una traición de esas que duelen el doble porque vienen de quien menos esperas. Dicen que cayó defendiendo lo que creía justo, plantándole cara al destino como siempre lo hizo: de frente y sin rajar.
Beto no era un santo, y nadie aquí va a venir a persignarse hipócritamente. Tenía sus sombras, sus negocios, sus maneras de entender la justicia en un lugar donde la ley muchas veces no llega o llega tarde. Pero para el barrio, Beto era un pilar. Era el que ponía orden cuando los “morros” se querían pasar de listos, el que ayudaba a la Doña de la tienda cuando los malandros le querían cobrar piso, el que siempre tenía un billete para la medicina de algún vecino jodido. Era, a su manera, un guardián. Un “comandante” sin placa, pero con la autoridad que da el respeto ganado a pulso en el asfalto.
El velorio, mis valedores, ha sido algo digno de verse. No cabía un alma. La calle se cerró no con cinta amarilla de la tira, sino con gente. Llegaron coronas de flores tan grandes que parecían murales, con listones que decían: “DE TUS CARNALES DE LA ESQUINA”, “HASTA SIEMPRE, JEFE”, “TU FAMILIA DEL BARRIO NO TE OLVIDA”. El olor a nardos se mezclaba con el humo de los cigarros y el vapor del café de olla con piquete que servían las tías.
Pero no fue un velorio de esos tristes y callados. No señor. Al Beto se le despide como vivió: con ruido, con pasión. La banda sinaloense llegó a eso de las diez de la noche y retumbaron las tubas y las trompetas. Sonó “El Rey”, sonó “Puño de Tierra”, y sonó esa que tanto le gustaba, “Cruz de Madera”. Y ahí, entre trago y trago de tequila, los hombres más “machines” del barrio, esos que presumen de no llorar nunca, se quebraron. Se vieron lágrimas rodar por mejillas tatuadas, abrazos fuertes entre rivales que hoy compartían el mismo duelo.
Las anécdotas volaban de boca en boca. “Te acuerdas cuando el Beto sacó a patadas a esos güeyes que querían robarse el coche del maestro?”, decía uno. “Simón, o cuando organizó la posada para los chavitos que no tenían ni para dulces”, contestaba otro. Cada historia era un ladrillo más en la leyenda que ahora se empieza a construir.
Hoy, la esquina se siente vacía. Falta su silueta recargada en la pared, falta su risa ronca, falta esa sensación de seguridad que daba saber que “El Comandante” andaba cerca. Queda la incertidumbre de qué pasará ahora que el dique se rompió, quién mantendrá a raya a los lobos que siempre acechan.
